UPDATE: Heath and I mentioned on the “Flash Forward LIVE” podcast in last week’s episode ( Episode#9 for “The Gift”) that we received a very good, but lengthy, theory from erseN in Istanbul, that would be posted on the blog(s). If you would like to read it, it is will be at the bottom of this post.

The LOST Revisited Now podcast will be putting out a couple episodes this month as this final hiatus is winding down. Just a little more than 2 months away until LOST’s return ( possible return date : January 20th, 2010).

In the meantime, we will be doing a special episode due out in the middle of this month. Yes, it is the ” Efren Salonga Podcast” . As our regular listeners know, Efren has made quite an impression on us since his brief but resonating appearance in Season 5’s Desmondcentric episode ” Jughead”. We’ll be joined by some fellow LOST podcasters in celebration of all that is ” Salonga”!

Heath and I will also be doing a two part special based on an article that I linked to prior to Season 5 Premiere that I first saw on Nicole’s LOST blog called ” The Pre Season Five Top Ten Essential Episodes” We are going to be looking back at these episodes and , in particular, why they may have stood out to Damon and Carlton when writing last season. We will be recording the first part sometime in the last week of November.

I will keep you updated on when these episodes will be posted.

Recently, Donald from the ” Donald is LOST” podcast did an all musical episode called…. ” Donald is LOST : The Musical” As well as, of course, joining Donald and his co-hosts, Charlotte and Mikhail, I had the pleasure in taking part in the episode along with fellow podcasters Anna in Indiana from the “Jacob’s Cabin” podcast and Matt & Leslie from the ” Keys To LOST” podcast ( and even a pivotal but silent part by Jed from ” LOSTies with Jed and Cara” ). Disclaimer 1: I’ll use the word “vision” because A. it’s shorter and 2. I’m so sick of everyone on the show saying “Flashforward” every few seconds! I don’t know why people would repeat the word so much when the whole damn world knows what they’re talking about. Flashforward. Yes. We got it. Everyone got it.

Disclaimer 2: It’s gonna be very long and may be very boring. But you guys like “ramble on” podcasts so you might like this. In either case I’ll try to provide a very short summary at the end; maybe it will make it easier to talk about on the podcast if you don’t have the time to (which is euphemism for “don’t wanna”) read all of it. The reason I’m not sending only the short version is that I don’t exactly know what I’m going to say, so I want to ramble on until I think I make my point. Please skip to the end at the moment it starts getting boring I really don’t want to waste anyone’s time.

Anyway…

It’s all about the ultimate question: Can they change their future?

Yawn Version

The first thing that comes to mind is a paradox: If they change it, it won’t happen, so how would they have seen it in the first place? While this is generally seen as a reason why they shouldn’t be able to change, I think it’s still possible. See this case is slightly different than the one that every time-travel story has to (but usually doesn’t) deal with: X happens. Joe goes back in time to prevent it. He does. X doesn’t happen. Future Joe doesn’t have a reason to go back in time anymore. Paradox.

This is different though. There’s no physical time-travel, and the consciousness travels to the future; not to the past. So it can be argued that nothing is changed from A to B, because the consciousness doesn’t travel to the past to change something that has already happened (like the time-travel scenario above), but it travels to the future, and whatever a character does in the future, it can’t change anything because nothing has happened yet–it’s all happening for the first time. So there’s no problem with the actual time-travel. The problem is with when the time in that future eventually comes to pass and whether everything has to happen exactly as seen before. Can they do anything differently?

The easiest answer here is that they can’t change the future, with the easiest explanation being what’s called a self-fulfilling prophecy. This simply means that something that was prophesied eventually comes to pass solely, or at least in large part, due to the prophecy. For example, if Joe is currently planning to go to Hawaii this weekend, then sees in a vision that he is in Florida visiting his parents on Saturday, and decides to cancel his trip to Hawaii and instead visit his parents because he’s worried about the vision and what it might mean, that becomes a self-fulfilled prophecy: He is in Florida because he saw he was going to be in Florida. A lot of characters on the show seem to be taking this path, willingly or not. Mark and Olivia are so worried about their visions that they keep fighting about the visions and it seems to be harming their relationship severely, probably leading to them breaking up, Mark drinking again and Olivia falling for this very charming, compassionate man who killed about a billion people.

Now the question about this theory is: Does this have to happen? Do these self-fulfilling prophecies take place only with people who, knowingly or not, give in to their visions, or do these have to happen to everyone because of some sort of course-correction of the universe to keep the space/time continuum intact? I think it’s the former, and people can change what they’ve seen.

The easiest argument for that is that we don’t know for sure that these visions are even truly visions of the future. The fact that they’re consistent doesn’t positively prove they’re truly visions of the future. It is an overwhelming evidence, yes, but not proof.

I’ll try to explain this by changing the argument slightly and making the theory a little more complicated:

The visions are truly visions of future, but it’s not the future; it’s a future. A lot of people think of time as a line, and this is the idea that supports the concept of time as the “fourth dimension”. However, time isn’t necessarily one-dimensional (a line), it could very well be two-dimensional (a plane). What we experience as time is actually duration, which is sort of a journey within time. Think of the fourth dimension, “duration”, as a line from the past to the future, consisting of points that represent “moments”. Since we can see only three dimensions, we cannot see this line, which is in the fourth dimension. We cannot see everything from the past to the future at the same time just like we see a complete line with a starting and ending point. Instead, we live in the three dimensional space, and we can only see a “moment”, or a point, in that line, at a time. Because we can see only these points, and not the whole line, we can’t even be sure that the line is straight! If the line is actually an arc, for example, it would automatically be two-dimensional. So what I’m saying is that time is probably not a line or an arc at all; it’s probably a plane and we go straight, right and left when we journey within time, but don’t know the difference because we can’t see past the three dimensions, and everything above is only a series of points, which make only a line to us when we connect them in our minds. If we go out of the house, to the road, and to the park, and at any moment we only see and feel only the exact place we are in and nothing else, we can only connect those dots in a straight line when we think about it: House to road to park. No sense of right, left, up or down makes us think that it’s straight while it actually isn’t. In a non-equivalent but close enough example that is easier to understand: When you are at some seaport and look at the ocean to see a boat at the horizon coming towards you, you see it that it’s slowly rising, because it’s not just far ahead, it’s also actually below your level (if you were to draw a imaginary line from your feet straight ahead), because the world is round. Yet the boat seems to go always at the same level which is the sea level, because wherever you are on the world, you can only see close surroundings and it always feels like it’s flat. And people did think that the world is flat because of that illusion. So the one-dimensional experience in time is only such an illusion, because we only see and feel the moment we’re in.

So time is actually a plane, and consists of not a definitive history, but possibilities. Within our journey in time we don’t have to go straight ahead. Every choice we make is a fork on the road, and we can go in different directions. It just so happens that we can only see where we are, and we can’t see these forks and the road ahead, and it just feels like a straight road.

So, if time is actually a plane and not a line, that would mean that if you see a future, it doesn’t mean that it necessarily will happen for you. It exists, because the time plane (not time line) has every possible thing that may happen within it, but what will happen depends only on choices people make. If you see a future where X happens, you may avoid it by taking another path and see that it doesn’t happen. It’s just like seeing a road sign that says Florida, and choosing not to take that road. What you see is a possibility.

Wow. That was long. Let me try to summarize that in a few sentences…

Summary

The easiest answer to whether they can change the future or not is that they can’t, because the visions will become self-fulfilling prophecies either due to the characters’ actions or the universe forcing the events to keep space/time intact.

However, I think that time is not strictly linear. The time is multi-dimensional, and it consists of all possibilities. The linear feel of time is a matter of perception; an illusion that is a result of our being able to perceive time by experiencing only the moment we are in. We can’t see the future, the past, or the other possibilities. So if you see a future in a vision but eventually avoid it, it won’t necessarily be a paradox. Because if all things that can possibly happen exist in “time”, we can see one possibility in a vision but eventually come to experience another. There’s no paradox because you don’t actually change anything, the other possibility that you saw before is still there, but just not where you are right now. You only think you changed it because you only experience the moment you are in, and are oblivious to the fact that the other possibility still exists.

Anyway. Sorry for causing drowsiness, or any damage to your eyes. ( End of Theory)

I want to correct what I believe was an error that I made on the latest ” FlashForward Live” podcast ( Oh, I’m sure there are several. This is just one that I’m pretty sure was a total mess up…lol) .

I was doing a second watch of the FF’s latest episode ” The Gift” and was taking down some notes and doing a little research. While I was doing this, I saw this really cool black triangular house that won an architectural design award. It was on the front page of the search engine, so I decided to make a small diversion and go check out the screen caps.

About an hour later, Heath and I recorded the show. He mentioned something about the Japanese character, that meant ” Believe”, that Nicole finished on Bryce’s drawing. I thought that I saw something shaped like the character as a statue that was near the fountains where the paramedics took away Al’s body. It turns out, that I think the black triangular image of the house popped into my mind and I confused the two.

So, I apologize for the mix up. But it would have been cool if there had actually been a Japanese character shaped statue there, right…lol?

I couldn’t find the original house that I saw. It was photographed from a different angle too. But this one is fairly close. ( Link)

*Sings* “The one with the bobblily head” . Ahem..Sorry…
That’s right! The news is out that LOST bobble head dolls ( Ben Linus {first seen at ComicCon}, Daniel Faraday, Edgar Halliwax and Richard Alpert) and GI Joe style Jack and Sawyer jumpsuited action figures either are available for purchase or pre order at Entertainment Earth.

I was staying up way too late the other night and caught the Season 3 episode ” The Brig” on HD ( Why do I do this? I own all the seasons and can watch them at anytime! I guess there’s just something special about stumbling onto a program. ) Maybe because of the hour I started deducing this theory that can account for its ridiculousness. And yet, here I am, writing about it anyway.

In this episode, Sawyer finally does in the elusive “original recipe” Sawyer, Anthony Cooper… the man he sees as the one who ruined his life, by strangling him with a chain. This is because Cooper’s son, John Locke, cannot. But it’s assumed, Locke would if he could. Benjamin Linus, kills Mr. Cooper’s son, John Locke… the man he perceives who ruined his life, in a similar manner with an extension cord ( Season 5, ” The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham”) . In turn, will Ben die, like Roger Linus, in an incident much like ” The Purge” ?

In the Season 3 finale, Jack Shephard is just about to make a suicidal move by throwing himself off a bridge in a drunken stupor, when he is stopped short by an accident on the road behind him. Christian Shephard, died in a suicidal drunken binge and threw himself into a fight he probably knew he couldn’t win (or at least, that’s what we were told).

So, this got me thinking… is this how things will end for the Losties? Will each of their demises ( if they take place) mirror those of their fathers/parents? Will Sawyer end up in a murder/suicide, possibly with Kate as his wife ? And will she die the same way as she killed her father i.e. in some kind of premeditated explosion?

There is another side to this scenario…

We saw Charlie’s mom in one episode but in ” Greatest Hits” she wasn’t there, especially noticeable absence during The Paces holiday/swimming lesson. Liam named his baby girl after Charlie and his mom in ” Fire + Water”. The way they spoke it sounded like she was no longer alive. Had Megan Pace given her life, possibly even in a sacrificial way, for her son(s) ? ( This is purely speculative…but it would be cool if we found that to be true somehow in Season Six).

David and Carmen are still around. So, does this bode well for Hugo?

Pierre Chang sent his son and wife away knowing that they would despise him, if it would save their lives. Miles finds out who his dad is and what he did for him. Miles, in turn, puts himself in a place of rejection by telling Pierre he is a time traveler to save his life ( and later, physically does rescue his father).

Does this work in reverse? Will Eloise get shot like she shot Daniel?

In this respect, is it fate or living by example?

I know… I know… I need to get more sleep.

Just read on DarkUFO that a schedule sheet from ABC’s LOST has revealed that the Season Six premiere episode appears to be on January 20th, 2010 ( If you click on the link to article, don’t worry if you are spoiler free. The episode titles have been blacked out) .

Now, if it is on the 20th, LOST will remain on Wednesdays but the time is still unclear. Will we be looking at a 10pm airing again?

Regardless, if this is correct, we are looking at less than 3 months away now for LOST’s return.

From various sources in the LOST fandom, the producers of LOST apparently were able to convince ABC to not show any footage from Season 6 within any commercial spots for the upcoming final season.

I first saw this on the stupendous lost.about.com site, Hosted by Bonnie Covel. It is an interview conducted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts with Executive Producers Damon Lindelof & Carlton Cuse and the show’s most prolific director, Jack Bender. They discuss the process of development, writing and shooting of the show, using some iconic scenes as examples. The interview also highlights how each of them began their careers in television.

Yes, I’m back with more nickname origins and this one’s from, who else….Sawyer.

In the Season One episode ” Whatever the Case May Be”, Kate is walking through the jungle alone…or at least she thinks she is.

Kate picks up a rock to defend herself against whatever is rustling in the jungle. She pitches at what she thinks might be a boar or worse. Instead, it is Mr. James Ford ( although no one knew that was his name yet.) To which, Sawyer jokingly grunts ” Me Kate! Me throw rock!”

Now, this nickname is a bit tricky. “Me Kate” is reflective of similar “branding” coming from the fictional quintessential Ape Man, Edgar Rice Burrows’ leading character from the classic tale ” Tarzan and the Apes” . ( ” Me Tarzan! You Jane! “)

Essentially, it is the story of a child who lost his parents during a violent animal attack in the jungle home they built after they were marooned in a shipwreck. He was raised by apes into his young adulthood but eventually was found several years later by some English explorers. Tarzan becomes ” civilized” but longs to be back in the wild with Jane, a woman who accompanied the team on their expedition of Tarzan’s homeland of Africa.

Orphaned boy… raised by another… needed to learn to be part of civilized society…” Me?! I’m in the wiiiild!” ? Nope…no similarities there!

Checking my Twitter account ( BunniesLRNow) and saw that I had a message that someone wrote a review of the ” LOST Revisited Now” podcast for the website www.thepodcastreview.net. This is a site that reviews podcasts of all sorts, not just LOST related. Just want to say ” Thank you” for taking the time to not only listen to the show but doing a write up and letting others know about the podcast too. ( not those Others)

I had the pleasure of sitting in on the “Lostaholics Rewatch” podcast this week. One of the episodes we reviewed was “Catch 22″ , which was Desmondcentric.

In Des’ flashback, he is living in a monastery where we meet Brother Campbell and why Des calls everyone ” Brutha”. Brother Campbell has his own mysterious connection in the story because of the poorly Photoshopped picture of him with Eloise Hawking. Are they related? Friends? Fellow former Islanders/Hostiles? Just one of the ” Get Your Picture Taken with the Guy Who Runs Mariah Vineyards” that was left behind on the tour bus? Time will tell…and hopefully, the writers will too.

But there was another monk that made an appearance in this episode. He brought Des’ ex- fiance , Ruth’s brother into the monastery that punched Brother Hume in the nose. And he also was going to give Desmond a ride back to town after he quit. His name was Brother Martin.

Knowing this was not that significant in previous viewings of this episode ( and may still not be…lol). But after ComicCon, this monk may have another connection within the show. During the “In Memorium” video that was shown at CC, a few people who went only by their first name, were finally given a surname. One of them was Alex Rousseau/Linus’ boyfriend, Karl. And it is…. Martin!

So, is Brother Martin Karl’s father, uncle or another relative, possibly being an Other/Hostile who left the Island? Since Brother Campbell is shown with Ms. Hawking, I don’t think this is too far fetched. Or will this just be a throw away name that was tacked on to give his character closer?

Now, back to rewatching more episodes to see who’s related to Libby Smith.

On September 22nd, 2004. I was Piloting through the channels on my old tube television set. The tv landscape was like a veritable Tabula Rasa as I’d Walkabout aimlessly across it. My White Rabbit ears were drooping down, as if saddened at the prospect of yet another adequate, but ultimately dissatisfying ,new season of programming.

But in The House emanating from the screen like the luminescence of the Rising Sun, was an image of the face of a man surrounded by radiating jungle brush. I had now become The Moth to the flame of this captivating scene. The smoke, the screams, the sheer magnitude of what was being presented in such a comparably small venue.

As I watched ( and what I heard was budgeted for) what amounted to a feature film in my living room, I thought that they had some kind of Confidence, Man, to put so much monetary backing into what I assumed was a Survivor/Jurassic Park/Melrose Place hybrid. But there was a polar bear, riveting character flashbacks and a mysterious French woman’s 16 year old transmission piping through a handheld radio. And I thought ” Am I Solitary in my discovery of how magnificent this show is?” I soon learned that the ratings were Raised By Another fan…and another…and another (growing into the enormous community it is today).

Despite the fact that All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues, were the writers just herding us into their own therapy sessions? Was this, like some critics/friends said….just a Gen X melodrama glossed with a Sci Fi veneer? Whatever the Case May Be, it didn’t matter. I knew it was Special. And I wasn’t alone in my assessment. It seemed like people all over the world had given it their Hearts and Minds. It was most evident in the abundance of podcasts, blogs and message boards dedicated to it. With it, came new friendships that may have never existed. People expressing their wisdom, their wit, their passion, their creativity. It was like a Homecoming for those who had experienced some level of fandom elsewhere but never to this extent. The internet was filled with Outlaws branching out from the standard fair of conventional outlets for fan appreciation.

I know that this was a new experience personally. I was …In Translation from being a once a week casual watcher to a full throttle card carrying geek! I looked at the Numbers on my driver’s license to make sure how old I was. Wasn’t I supposed to have left this kind of behavior behind many years ago?

Yet it was no use. I was hooked! Rewatching, reanalysis, reheating dinner because I was trying to finish up another post. It seems like there was no way out of the corner of this obsession, save some sort of Deus Ex Machina. But in the end, I think it will Do No Harm. In fact, it has been for The Greater Good with the myriad of subjects that have been studied trying to “figure out” what’s actually going on on this show.

Well, I must Exodus from this egregiously convoluted blog entry. But not without wishing LOST a Happy 5thCrashiversary to ( IMO) the best show EVER!

I was listening to Alex’s LOST Hiatus podcast and he was briefly mentioning his theory about the Smoke Monster. That Smokey at one point was a living being, possibly even a spiritual entity of some sort (Cerebus?) But then perhaps something happened that made it necessary to “harness” it and it is now partially mechanical ( Very interesting theory, by the way Alex ) .

Disclaimer: I fully admit, the following theory is pretty “out there” and I’m not even sure where it’s going entirely…. but I decided to put it up anyway.

This got me thinking about the mixing of these two elements (organic and metallic) and of LOST writers admiration of ( yes, I know, again) “Star Wars”… and this scene came to mind ( I have a feeling that Hurley probably wouldn’t have stayed conscious watching this ) .

In LOST, Season One, there is a Lockecentric episode titled ” Deus Ex Machina” which means ” God from the machine”. This is a term used for writers/playwrights who write themselves into a corner and can’t find a plausible way to end their story. So, they would tack on “God/an angel swoops down and saves the day! The End.” In this episode, Anthony Cooper told Locke that he must be “God” if he was his father, since he was “immaculately conceived”, according to Emily. We find out though that it was really Cooper that thought of the conception story for the con to steal John’s kidney.

But what if what Cooper/Emily were saying was actually true? And what if “Deus Ex Machina” is in the literal sense in LOST’s story line ? That there is an immortal being that resides within a machine. That this title might be a clue as to what Smokey is.

Maybe the first time we actually see Locke meet his dad wasn’t in a ” Deus Ex Machina” flashback but on Island in ” Walkabout”?
