LOST Thoughts : It’s All in the Attitude

I just got LOST Season 3 on Blu Ray ( Yes, I am now officially “hooked” on the format ) and am in the midst of the “cage” portion of the season. At the end of the second episode ” The Glass Ballerina” , Ben is informing Jack of what has been occurring ” at home” while he’s been on the Island, including an unimaginable Red Sox World Series victory.
lost-jack-t2 Jack : ” What do you want from me?”
ben-t13 Ben : ” I want you to change you Att….perspective. And the first step in that is for me to introduce myself, honestly. So…( gets off chair, extends his hand) Hi! My name is Benjamin Linus and I’ve lived on this Island all of my life” ( So much for honesty 😉 )

danielfaraday-tDaniel Faraday has repeatedly chastised both charlotte-tCharlotte and miles-tMiles for their “negative” attitudes as well. And I’m sure, between lost-sawyer-t1Sawyer and shannon-tShannon alone, they must have already filled the Island’s quota. 🙂

So, why the emphasis on people’s attitude? Does it have to do with negative attitudes effecting the Island itself? Is it much like the 1950’s Sci Fi classic “Forbidden Planet” in that *FP spoiler*
The people on the planet were materializing a “monster” that was attacking them, out of their own subconscious, hidden desires. *End of Spoiler for FP*

In the pseudo-scientific realm, a man named Dr. Masaru Emoto has done some provocative studies that suggest that words affect water molecules positively and negatively. He would take bottles of water, put labels on the outside with various words/phrases on them. Some of the water bottles had positive words on them (” Love” ” Thank you” ” You’re beautiful” etc). But other bottles had negative words and phrase on them. Emoto even had people speaking to the water as well. He would then freeze the water and observe the differences in the structure of the molecules. Emoto claims that the water that was “spoken to” positively, crystalized beautifully. But the ones that were “spoken to” negatively, he claims that the molecules were poorly formed or even did not crystalize at all. So, Emoto concluded that, if we are almost entirely made of water, then how much do our words affect the health and well-being of ourselves and each other?

Now, whether what Dr. Emoto claims is true or not, (IMO) the concept would make for an intriguing plot devise. 🙂 In theory, can this also be happening on the Island too? Do the words, attitudes, actions etc. , affect the Island positively and/or negatively? Does it affect the electro magnetic properties of the Island? The weather? Time-travel? The healing process? The aging process? Birthing issues?

My guess is that the writers affect the Island the most…. but nevertheless…. 🙂

Great post! Wow, that is amazing about the Emoto experiments with water. I’ll buy it! And they’re lucky that the island didn’t sink altogether with Shannon’s b*tchy ‘tude!

You know, Fenris and I over at The Lost Community have had the running theory that Smokey is going to be like the Id Monster from “Forbidden Planet”! Although, Ben didn’t unleash him by falling asleep. 🙂

Again, those characatures are so awesome! X-D Now, I’m going to go do a search on Dr. Emoto!

Dr. Emo?? Hahaha! Your theory makes sense, especially regarding most of the people who have met untimely deaths, live burials, or been allowed to leave the island. With that attitude, you can GO.

108minuteman: LOL Apparently, sporting a “tude on the Island…can be hazardous to your health . The Surgeon General is probably looking into it right now. 🙂

Capcom: Was thinking the same thing that you and Fenris were about Forbidden Planet/Smokey connection ever since Kate and the fear/counting to five scene. And Ben…those eyes are wide open at all times…lol.

Thank you both for the comments ( and The Artist Presently Known as Scott says “Thank you” too 🙂 )

    Ms. Wendy …

Since you have Season 3 on Bluray, can you check something for me? Episode 4, during the “funeral” for Col … When they cut to Jack and Juliet, there are two “Others” in the background. One is seen in other scenes, but the other … looks like DANIEL FARADAY.

Can you check that scene on Blu-Ray and see if it’s him?

    Hi SuperRob,

I checked it out last night on blu ray . Unfortunately, it wasn’t Daniel Faraday at Colleen’s funeral.

Thanks for letting me know about it. If you have anymore possible “sitings”, just let me know. 🙂
