LOST Thoughts : What’s In a Name?

WARNING: This is about something that was made known at the San Diego ComicCon. If you don’t want to know anything from this event, please skip this post. 🙂

I had the pleasure of sitting in on the “Lostaholics Rewatch” podcast this week. One of the episodes we reviewed was “Catch 22” , which was Desmondcentric. desmond-t1

In Des’ flashback, he is living in a monastery where we meet Brother Campbell and why Des calls everyone ” Brutha”. 🙂 Brother Campbell has his own mysterious connection in the story because of the poorly Photoshopped picture of him with Eloise Hawking. Are they related? Friends? Fellow former Islanders/Hostiles? Just one of the ” Get Your Picture Taken with the Guy Who Runs Mariah Vineyards” that was left behind on the tour bus? Time will tell…and hopefully, the writers will too. 🙂

But there was another monk that made an appearance in this episode. He brought Des’ ex- fiance , Ruth’s brother into the monastery that punched Brother Hume in the nose. And he also was going to give Desmond a ride back to town after he quit. His name was Brother Martin.

Knowing this was not that significant in previous viewings of this episode ( and may still not be…lol). But after ComicCon, this monk may have another connection within the show. During the “In Memorium” video that was shown at CC, a few people who went only by their first name, were finally given a surname. One of them was Alex Rousseau/Linus’ boyfriend, Karl. And it is…. Martin!

So, is Brother Martin Karl’s father, uncle or another relative, possibly being an Other/Hostile who left the Island? Since Brother Campbell is shown with Ms. Hawking, I don’t think this is too far fetched. Or will this just be a throw away name that was tacked on to give his character closer?

Now, back to rewatching more episodes to see who’s related to Libby Smith. 😉

    Wow…

    great catch.

I’d really like to believe that’s what it’s supposed to mean, but given the “sometimes a gold car is just a gold car” comment we got when Micheal and several others had run-ins with the same prop car, I’m wondering if the writers are thinking Martin just went well with Karl.

I think you’re on to something, though.

    Thanks, Scott! 🙂

Yes, it might be something a as simple as they just like the name ” Martin” like they do ” Lapidus”.
That is a bit disheartening about the “gold car”. Then again, I can’t help thinking that maybe there is more to it and they are keeping it on the down low as to not spoil some major revelation.

I know…I know…I’m probably dreamin’. But it make me feel better. 😉

    Hi Scott and MsWendy,

Johann Karl Ludwig Martin was a 18th century geologist and Director of Geol. Museum of Leiden (Germany connection) who studied and travel to Dutch East Indies (Java). OK, maybe not as significant as Brother Martin.

Or it could be for Karl Martin, set designer LOST 2004.

Lots of mystery surrounding Karl. I’m thinking that Alex crawled into the bear cage and Ben watched. Karl ended up in Room 23.

But why wait until Season 6 to reveal last name? Not so much as to Karl’s story, but Brother Martin’s? Good catch mswendy.

    Hi Lottery Ticket!

Hey, nice research on the possible origins of Mr. Karl Martin. I wouldn’t be surprised if it actually was the later. They uses the name Van Eegan for the guy from Hanso Foundation at last year’s ComicCon. There is a Van Eegan who also works behind the scenes on LOST.

Ben did utter the infamous line in ” Confirmed Dead” ” Kaaaaaaaarl! Now if you’re going to sleep with my daughter, I insist that you call me Ben”.

Brother Martin’s name was mentioned a couple times and made the credits. It’s just enough to notice without being too obvious. So, if it actually turns out to be something important that looks like it came out of nowhere, the writers can point to this episode.

Thanks! 🙂 Exactly! Why keep these names a secret? For instance, Libby’s last name was purposely left out , even at her funeral and at the O6 press conference…just to put drop it in a ComicCon memorial video?

In a delete scene from a Season Two script, Libby was supposed to have been married three times and specialized in marriage counseling. Makes me wonder just where the writers were going to take her character and to whom of significance, she was hitched?
