LOST Thoughts: S6/Ep14- The Candidate or The Island’s Submarine Ballot

Here’s a few extra thoughts about ” The Candidate”. If you would like to hear more about this episode, check out The LOST Revisited Now podcast, Episode #106. 🙂

Interestingly, the word “candidate” comes from the word “candida” in Latin ( “The language of the enlightened”) is the word for “white”. Jacob’s light side, signified by the white stone … these are ( or were) his “chosen”. Another little footnote, “Candida” was the song by Three Dog Night ,that Jerry and Rosie danced to in the Season 5 episode ” LaFleur”.

Sun had Charlie’s ring and she is gone now. Desmond went into the water with the ” Greatest Hits” note. Are Charlie’s sentiments and legacy supposed to be “buried” with him, underwater? Water seems to be associated with Jacob. Is this why Charlie, Sun and Jin died drowning? If MIB is associated with fire, is this why Sayid blew up? But then, what about Ilana? Oh, I don’t know…lol. But I’m curious to see why/how these elements play further into the story.

On the subject of water, with MIB being thrown into it by Jack, how does it affect him? I read/heard someone mention that maybe it just keeps him from changing into the Smoke Monster. I just had a thought. With all the mechanical sounds that it makes, even all the way back in ” Ab Aeterno” times, does water throw off its internal “works”, so to speak?

With Locke and Jack ( one in FS, one in OTL) have flying experience, will this become a factor in them getting off the Island… or tricking MIB?

We see the Apollo bar again when Jack buys it and offers it to his half sister ( in both time-lines), Claire. She refuses ( And like Leslie on Keys To LOST podcast pointed out, is it because she’s on the “dark side” now?) Apollo, in Greek and Roman mythology, was the god of light and the sun, truth and prophesy. He also had a twin sister, Artemis, a hunteress ( twin and hunter…hmm). Apollo was known for being a healer, often with the help of his son, Asclepius. The rod that Asclepius carried has entwined snakes and is used as the symbol caduceus, like on the medical hatch ( I wonder if this is why Jack’s son, David has emerged in the FS time-line. Will he play a role in the “healing”, either physically or with the time-lines?) . But Apollo could bring sickness with him, as well. Apollo was a leader over his people and was a defender and keeper of herds and flocks ( like a shepherd/Shephard?) . He also was connected with music (the Shephard’s proclivity for piano?) I wonder if Grandpa Ray was part of Apollo candy and/or the buying of the company by the Dharma Initiative, in someway, back in the sixties? The family business may not just be in medicine.

If Sayid, in his last moments, came back from the dark side , like Hurley suspected that he could, will we see that happen for Claire? Will she leave on that helicopter with Aaron? Did Charles Widmore have the last of the Oceanic Six behind another double-locked door, next to the sub’s Pylons R’ Us Warehouse? 🙂

With Sun and Jin gone, Claire staying with MIB and Kate shot, Jack not leaving the Island, Desmond being a “sacrifice” of some sort, etc. is this making more and more room for the children of the Losties to play a more forefront role in the end game? It seems like many of our Losties were “orphaned” in a way, – in actuality like James, through neglect, abandonment, separation, etc. It looks like the children are following a similar path. Or is this where “It only ends once…” . I believe it is most likely the latter but I hope that we get to still find out why, especially Walt and Aaron, are “special”.

And finally, R.I.P. to Frank, Jin, Sayid and Sun.

I’ve got a bad feeling it’s not going to get any easier from here. But still going to dive into the next episode #15.

LOST Thoughts : 316 (or What’s Old is New Again)

mswendygravitar8

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16 KJV)

Sacrifice…substitution…surrender…

This seemed to be the theme of this past episode ” 316″ .

lost-locke-t1Locke : Surrendered himself to the Island’s “expectations”
Substituted christianshephard-tChristian Shephard with himself
Sacrificed his life as a means of doing that

lost-jack-t2Jack : Surrendered his need for “proof”
Substituted the “ridiculous” with ” will it work”
Sacrificed his pride , changed the shoes and read the letter

Other “surrenders” …

lost-sayid-t1Sayid : Surrendered to the Marshall (which got him on the plane)
lost-kate-t1Kate: Surrendered Aaron to something/someone unknown
sun-tSun: Surrendered her thirst for revenge
lost-hurley-tHurley: Surrendered to the idea of having Ben around
ben-t13Ben: Surrendering to the fact that he can legitimately get beat at his own game ( as well as just beat 🙂 )
franklapidus-tFrank : Surrendering to the knowledge that ” We aren’t going to Guam, are we?” 8)

And there were substitutions galore in the flight 815 reenactment:

Jack for Locke in his “faith journey”
Kate for Jack in the “skeptic” role
Hurley carrying a guitar case like lost-charlie-t1Charlie
Kate with the Marshall is now Sayid with the Marshall
Kate may possibly be “The pregnant girl” like claire-tClaire ( and in turn, may prove perilous)
Ben was late like Hurley
Jack with letter/ lost-sawyer-t1Sawyer with letter
Frank for Seth , as the pilot
Man in line at airport lending sympathy to Jack for his loss… standing in for Ana Lucia
Sun with ring, hopeful about husband, lost-jin-tJin, being alive … Rose/Bernard
Jack and Claire half/brother & sister, boone-t1Boone and shannon-tShannon step brother and sister
Kate with issue with not being with her “son” Aaron / Michaellost-michael-t1 and walt-t2Walt
Jack with substance abuse problem/ Charlie with substance abuse problem
Jack’s letter “reappearing”/ Sayid’s picture of Nadia “reappearing”
Ben and Walt possibly having the same “specialness” , discovered in childhood (?)
Jack and Kate in estranged relationship/Jin and Sun
(IMO) Awkward “moment” between Jack and Kate, prior to flight, reminiscent of Boone/Shannon (different context, though)
Jack saving others through burning wreckage… now jumping off of waterfall to rescue ( Fire + Water {?} )

And in the end, they all sacrificed what they thought they wanted, finally being “home”, to what was “supposed” to happen, being on the Island.

But desmond-t1Desmond… he’s through with the Island, brotha! At least, for now anyways. 😉

LOST Thoughts (and video) : Sawyer Nickname Origin # 31

lost-sawyer-t1Sawyer stikes up a conversation with walt-t2Walt out in the jungle about The Others’ “fiendishly clever” plan of planting a “ringer” (Ethan Rom) in the camp to take “a pregnant girl claire-t(Claire) and a reject from VH1 Has Beens” lost-charlie-t1 ( Charlie)

VH1, considered by many as MTV’s “mellower (?) younger brother” is a cable television station that, at it’s inception in 1985, was playing more “Top 40/Adult Contemporary” music videos. But not too much later, started infusing programs that were about the music being played and those who played it than just the videos themselves. Probably one of the more popular non-video programs was ” Behind the Music” (i.e. “VH1 Has Beens ” ) . Each episode mainly consisted of …

First: Fame , fortune and fighting
Then : Drugs, debauchery and disbandment
And lastly: Rehab, recovery and reunion tours.

Who knows? Maybe because of the crash and Drive Shaft’s/Charlie’s posthumous success (at least according to Naomi) we might see Liam and the boys with their own VH1 “Behind the Music” special. But until then, here’s the next best thing… a behind the scenes look at a Drive Shaft ” documentary” from Lost Season One’s Extras disc.

LOST Thoughts ( and video) : Sawyer Nickname Origin # 30

lost-sawyer-t1 Sawyer is treking up to the caves to get his medicine ( because Jacklost-jack-t2 doesn’t trust him not to steal it) for the wound Sayidlost-sayid-t1 accidently gave him by stabbing him through the arm ( To be fair, it was only supposed to be a standard round of torture..no “fancy stuff” 😉 ) . On Sawyer’s way, he runs into “Tattoo” walt-t2 (Walt) who proceeds to tell him about claire-t Claire and lost-charlie-t1 Charlie’s kidnapping by Ethan “Not in Ontario” Rom. ( All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues, Season One)

Tattoo (played by Herve Villechaize) was the name of the diminutive “right hand man” character with the signature catch phrase of “Da plane! Da plane!”, on the hit ABC series from the late 70’s/early 80’s entitled ” Fantasy Island”. (Which was on right after “The Love Boat” . So, I bet you know where I was every Saturday night. 😉 )

The show was about Mr. Roarke (played by Ricardo Montalban i.e. Star Trek’s Khan) a very mysterious man who owned several white suits and a very exclusive hideaway island resort that would grant the guests whatever their heart desired. But it would always come with a heavy price tag ($50,000 and some sort of supernaturally induced trauma, inflicted upon the guests by Mr. Roarke with the help of Tattoo)

So, if Walt is Tattoo, who is Mr. Roarke ? Is it Mr. Locke lost-locke-t1, as he is fond of calling him? If it is, maybe this is how LOST will end? We’ll see Walt and Locke perform an equally unsettling soft shoe in the last remaining undiscovered Dharma Station. 🙂

LOST Cartoon Art : Walt’s Dog (Technically Brian’s)

Vincent (played by Madison)

Is he “dark” or is he “light” . Say, gang! Maybe we can get him to “solve the mystery” with a Dharma Initiative Vinnie Snack? (Ehheeheeheeheehee)

Happy LOST Thought of the Day : Michael telling Walt he’ll look for Vincent as soon as it stops raining.

LOST Cartoon Art : He’s Nine…Ten! He’s Ten. (and now, I think he’s 9’10”)

Walter Lloyd (played by Malcolm David Kelly) : If you were thinking about letting him take care of your pet parakeet while you’re away….you might want to call somebody else.

Happy LOST Thought of the Day: Walt grinning at an exhausted “Thumbs Up” Hurley boarding the plane.

LOST Thoughts : The Amazing Reappearing Drive Shaft Ring

I was recently listening to Heath from The Lost Revisited podcast reviewing the episode ” The Moth” (Season One). He was bringing up an interesting point about when Charlie started doing drugs. He mentioned about the Season Three episode “Greatest Hits” where Liam gave Charlie the DriveShaft ring, calling Charlie “the only drug free rock star”. Heath was asking where The Moth falls in the timeline, with the diaper wearing /piano selling portion (“Fire+Water”,Season Two) closest to the crash of Oceanic 815.

So, in light of Heath’s observation, I went back to the scene in The Moth where Liam gives Charlie the “pep talk” of if Charlie quits DriveShaft now, what’s he going to do with his life because he is otherwise useless. (I think Liam was my guidance counselor in high school) 🙂

After the blowup with Liam, Charlie picks up a bag of heroin, and sits looking and at himself, crying and placing his hand across his face. Although we don’t actually watch him take drugs, it is heavily implied that this may have been the beginning of his own addiction. It is here that the DriveShaft ring is seen.

This ring was first given to Charlie when they were on the second tour of Finland (“Greatest Hits” Season Three), also mentioned in the Pilot episode to Kate as they and Jack were in search of the cockpit. But when Liam gives him the ring, Charlie isn’t doing drugs. So, even though the majority of the episode was from the earliest part of the band’s formation, is part of the episode way in the future , just prior to the diaper debacle? Or is this a big mix up on the writers’ part?

Here’s an option : Charlie might have “pestered” Liam early on to let him wear the ring on stage. (Big brother, little brother stuff 🙂 ) It was clearly a big deal for him to wear it, considering Charlie is a bit of a sentimental guy. It also symbolizes his need to “save” the family with his musical talent that his mom “lovingly” saddled on him when they gave him a piano at Christmas as a young boy ( But no pressure 😉 ) . So, when Liam knew he was slipping in his responsiblities as family “leader”, he made it “official” and gave the ring to Charlie in Finland.

So, where is the DriveShaft ring now (and will Aaron ever have it like Charlie wanted him to) ? Did it get blown up during the Others invasion? Is it stuck in a tire of Hurley’s Dharma Microbus when he ran over Ryan? Did it get wash up with the tide and is now on its third tour of Finland? And who is Dexter Straton, the ring’s namesake? Does he have anything to do with The Black Rock….or with Charles Widmore? Is this why Charlie was named Charlie?

And come to think of it, didn’t Green Lantern have a power ring…the same Green Lantern in Walt’s comic book? Perhaps there’s more to that DriveShaft ring than meets the eye? Was it the ring that was protecting Charlie all this time and he was only truly vulnerable when he removed it?

Did he think this was his only way of “protecting” Aaron because Charlie knew “danger surrounds this baby”? The ring was “passed” to Aaron prior to Charlie’s impending death. Apparently, this is the ideal way the ring works in the Green Lantern “universe”. (See Wikipedia for more info) And maybe that’s why Liam gave it to Charlie? Liam was talking like he thought he wasn’t going to “make it” because of his habit.

Perhaps that fight between Charlie and Hurley about Superman vs. The Flash in “Catch 22” (Season Three) wasn’t just small talk….but “shop talk”? Or, as hinted at in early season one, does it all lay at the feet (or in the mind) of Taller Ghost Walt? 😉

Happy LOST Thought of the Day: Charlie name-dropping DriveShaft to the priest in the confessional.

LOST Parody – Stuck in the Middle with Klugh

This is a parody I wrote about everyone’s favorite irritable raft builder turned trigger happy Pappy, Michael Dawson. Welcome back, Michael…um..no..Kevin….ah, ….Harold Perrineau! 🙂

(If you’d like to hear more LOST Parodies, click the link or find them under “LOST Parodies” under “Catergories” in the Blogroll)

STUCK IN THE MIDDLE WITH KLUGH

Well, I’ve sat here in this grass hut all night
I got a feeling somethin’ just ain’t right
I got scared to see my boy standing there
In three minutes, gonna take him from here
Walt to the left of me , Others to the right
Here I am, stuck in the middle with Klugh

Yes, I’m stuck in the middle with Klugh
Her ambiguious questions hit me “1-2″!
It’s so hard to have to betray my friends
But to get Walt, I’ll have to kill to get Ben
Walt to the left of me, Others to the right
Here I am, stuck in the middle with Klugh

Well, they’re makin’ Walt take tests and Klugh spoke of a secret room
They’re my friends, but it’s not my fault
I just got tired of screamin’ ” WAAAAALT!” “WAAAALT!”

Well, I’m tryin’ to make some sense of it all
Shootin’ Ana and Libby, right down the hall
It’s not cool cleanin’ their blood of the floor
And that Eko’s talkin’ devil dog lore
But there was Walt to the left of me and the Others to the right
There I was stuck in the middle with Klugh (Yeah!)

Well, they’re makin’ Walt take tests and Klugh spoke of a secret room
They’re my friends, but it’s not my fault
I just got tired of screamin’ “WAAAAAALT!” “WAAAAALT!”

It was wrong, killin’ those ladies that night
And help kidnap these four probably ain’t right
But, hey Guys, you can play football out there
And for Kate, there is some nice summerwear

Conscience to the left of me, rescue to the right
Here I am, stuck in the middle with Klugh
Yes, I’m stuck in the middle with Klugh
Well, I’m stuck in the middle with Klugh
Stuck in the middle with Klugh
