LOST Video : Desmond Contacts … Sesame Street?!

mswendygravitar8 I think this was a deleted scene of Desmond’s mis-dial before he reached Penny.
I still say they should have tried to shimmy it into ” The Constant”. 😉

LOST Thoughts : Daniel’s Post Nasal Skip ?

mswendygravitar8

So far, who among our Losties has had nosebleeds on the Island that haven’t been blown up or shot with a flaming arrow? ( Rose and Bernard, still in question 🙂 )

If Daniel danielfaraday-t is correct in his theory about time being a factor in that the further in the past and/ or longevity on the Island, the sooner and more severely the symptoms would occur. But where does this place lost-locke-t1Locke and Daniel? Maybe Locke was somehow “blocked” from the affects by being down near the donkey wheel and has now, returned “home”. But that doesn’t explain Daniel.

As we know from this season’s first episode ” Because You Left”, Daniel was on the Island when the Dharma Initiative were constructing the Orchid and filming the Arrow Station video ( Starring Dr. Marvin Candle aka Pierre Chang) . That was in the early 80’s, roughly thirty years ago. And from all indications, Daniel was that crazy man Charlotte saw during her childhood , warning her to never return. My best guess, is that this might have occurred just prior to The Purge, twelve years, now almost thirteen years earlier ( according to Horace Goodspeed).
Daniel was also exposed to heavy doses of electromagnetism/radiation, in both his lab and now, being near “Jughead”, the leaking H bomb in 1954. And yet, he didn’t experience what desmond-tDesmond, Minkowski, etc did on the Freighter ( at least that we’re aware of) .

Is it because he is Ms. Hawking’s son? Is this another form of being “special”? Is Faraday, like some are speculating, similar to richard-t7Richard in being originally even further in the future than even present Island time? Therefore, Daniel is not affected, age-wise or symptom-wise because all this hasn’t “happened” yet for him? Is it because of the “work” he still might have to do?

Hey, who knows? This could all be straightened out after tonight’s episode.

Until then… Daniel should really consider keeping a Little (Time) Travelers Tissue Pack close by. 🙂

LOST Thoughts (and video) : Just Savin’ the World(?)

mswendygravitar8

Pushing the button…”Just savin’ the world”. desmond-t1

Remembering a bit (and I mean, a very little bit 😉 ) about The Lost Experience, sandwiched between Seasons 2 & 3, there was a “secret” film that was obtained by the ARG hostess, Rachel Blake (i.e. Alvar Hanso’s daughter) . In it, Dr. Thomas Mittlewerk, a fairly high level person in the Hanso Foundation, was giving a clandestined lecture about the “necessity” of about 30% of the world population needed to be eliminated to keep what was composed within the Valenzetti Equation (4,8,15,16,23,42) from destroying the entire planet. According to the mythology, it is believed that if you could alter the sequence somehow, it would stave off “the end of all things”. I’m assuming that Mittlewerk was convinced that the “solution” was through population “downsizing”. Part of his plan was to give tainted vaccines to people in remote portions in Africa. The “logic” being that the mass poisoning would probably go unnoticed by the rest of the “civilized world” (Think Mr. Eko’s lost-eko-t flashbacks….possibly more sinister that even he knew).

Then I started to think about another “method” that might have been employed as well…The button.

Back in the early 1960, a psychologist from Yale University name Stanley Milgram was conducting experiments to see how the average person could be manipulated to do unspeakable acts merely through feeling obligated to submit to authority. He was intriged by the Nazi trials that were still taking place after World War II and wondered how something like that could happen. He decided to do a study on this phenomena. It was called the Milgram experiment.

In the Milgram experiment, the subject is placed in a room with a glass partition with another person on the other side. They are told that the person in the other room is hooked up to wires and will be asked a series of questions. If they get the answer incorrect, the subject must push a button which will subsequentially shock the person behind the glass. They are told that the voltage will increase with each incorrect response. Oh, by the way, the subject is told that the person being “Jeopardized” in the other room, has a heart condition, which could prove fatal. If the subject protests, they are ask to continue politely. With each refusal, the “instructor” will be more urgent in that the subject “must do it for the experiment to work”.

Now, you hope that at some point, the sooner the better, that the subject would refrain, despite the immediate social disaproval from the “instructor”. Some, surprisingly more than Milgram expected, didn’t stop. They just keep pushin’ that button.

So, it got me thinking. What if they were told the opposite? What if someone was told that by pushing a button, they were the sole gatekeeper in the “Saving the World” club ? What would that do to them? To think that what they are doing is so “important” to the survival of the rest of us? Would they be as ready as Jack lost-jack-t2to “Let’s just SEE what gonna happen!” and stop pushing it? Or would they, even at the suggestion, feel obligated to it? What if they were told it was the only great thing they would ever do? Quite a more accessible and appealing motivation…positive reenforcement.

But what if pushing that button wasn’t savin’ the world? In fact, what if, unknown to them…that they were slowly killing it? What if by pushing that ( Execute ) button, they were actually causing people to perish? That Mittlewerk’s ..well…”work”…was being carried out through them every 108 minutes? Could it possibly be through The Tempest releasing gas, not on the island, but throughout the world in small doses? (With the Purge being a reverse, killing the island inhabitants of the Dharma Initiatives by ” The Hostiles” ) In his mind, and possibly many others in the Hanso Foundation, were “saving the world” by doing what they thought would be for “the greater good”. That man could hold back Armeggedon, and yet ,ironically at the same time, ushering it in with their murderous actions.

And if this is what is happening, could it mean that Ben ben-t13 just might be one of the “good guys” after all ?

Ben telling the truth? That might be an even more mind-blowing prospect than the whole “button pushing” thing! 😉

Here is a terrific video about the D.I. (Made by campetin for youtube)

LOST Thoughts : Oh, the Constant Theorizing

mswendygravitar8

Last season, we were treated to the concept of constants. desmond-t1Desmond and danielfaraday-t Daniel …seemingly, ben-t13Ben and Widmore…perhaps lost-jack-t2 Jack and lost-locke-t1Locke and Aaron and claire-tClaire. Now, another possible “team” has come to mind : Michaellost-michael-t1 and lost-jin-t Jin.

Michael and Jin were very antagonistic to each other from minute one. They had their share of fist fights and “misunderstandings” 🙂 . However, they eventually became very close friends. But was it more than that? Did they “need” each other, according to ” The Rules”? Were they each other’s “constant”?

Jin’s devotion to Michael was strong. He had risked his life on several occasions for his friend. This steadfastness even interfered with his marital relationship with Sunsun-t. So, when Jin wouldn’t leave the freighter when it was packed with explosives, was it because of something more than “loyalty” (especially considering Michael’s “indiscretion” of murdering Ana Lucia and Libby) ? And is this why, if they are both dead, that they met their demise simultaneously? (And thinking along those lines, were Ana and Libby each other’s constant?)

Considering this poses another question: Do constants have to be in reciprocating “pairs”? Now, Daniel wrote in his book that Des is his constant. And we assume that Penny is Desmond’s constant. But, if “they all have to go back” , maybe Daniel is Desmond’s constant too (or perhaps his only constant) ? Maybe Mrs. Hawking is right about Desmond not marrying Penny and that the only great thing that he will ever do is push that button (and “saving the world”). That would be heartbreaking, because I love their relationship. But if this is the case, the “death” of Des&Pen may be another “sacrifice that the Island demanded”. 😦

So, if constants or ” Our Mutual Friends” 😉 is how it works, are all the Losties “paired up” for survival? And, out of necessity, can they switch constants? Can you have multiple constants…or does that defeat the purpose and urgency of being a constant? What happens if you lose your constant? If you do, is there a constant “warrantee” that you can replace the one you have if something goes wrong? And if you do become a constant, do you have to invest in 80’s skinny ties (or being a lady, perhaps aerobic workout headbands)? 😉

So many questions…so many more questions coming in January. 🙂

LOST Thoughts : Happy Birthday, Sawyer?

lost-sawyer-t

LOST is filled with lines spoken that are peculiar…ambiguous…potentially rife with multi-meaning. IMO, one of the oddest bits of dialog comes from the Season One episode ” White Rabbit”.

It “looks” like Sawyer had been hoarding what was left of the water from Flight 815. Kate lost-kate-t1 and Sayid lost-sayid-t1 decide to lay low for a while then follow Sawyer because” a rat will always lead you to its hole”. Sure enough, Sawyer goes to a frond covered suitcase, buried in the jungle , containing some disaster “discoveries” ( but no water) . He is confronted first by Kate. They have a slight altercation and she lands on top of him. To which, Sawyer exclaims ” I made this birthday wish four years ago”.

Right off the bat, I’m thinking Sawyer’s just being Sawyer with one of his famous “snappy one liners’. But then it just seemed even more awkward than the situation that they just found themselves in. It was a pretty bizarre thing to say to a “stranger” ? And four years ago? Why four?

We find out toward the end of the first season in the Hurleyrific lost-hurley-t< episode ” Numbers”, that four (along with 8,15,16,23 and 42) is a significant number. But it also is a significant period of time. Life altering things happened to some of the characters “four years ago”, such as Lockelost-locke-t1< becoming paralyzed and Sun sun-t and Jin lost-jin-t getting married (any others, please let me know 🙂 )

When I watched ” Through the Looking Glass” for the first time, for a minute, I thought that Jack lost-jack-t1 and Kate knew each other prior to being on the Island. But we soon learn about the “twist” of their post Island meeting.

Will there be a “twist” that reveals that Kate and Sawyer actually did know each other before they crashed? Did something happen between Sawyer and Kate four years earlier, maybe they just aren’t fully “conscious” of it? Is Sawyer having “flashes” of the past, much likedesmond-t1Desmond…or even danielfaraday-t Daniel Faraday? If he is, I think the writers, much like the character, are keeping it “close to the chest” , like when Sawyer tried to not talk to Sayid about The Whispers 🙂 .

Eh, it’s “food for thought” …. possibly in the form of some very moldy birthday cake. 😉

LOST Poll : LOST Merchandise

Despite LOST being the mega worldwide hit that it is, I believe that those “in charge” are not seizing the opportunity for the abundant bounty that is merchandising royalties. In other words….I want more stuff to buy with LOST on it 😉 ( Probably have to go in Desmond’s ” Way Back Machine” to answer this…or in my case, not… geeky kid that I still am 🙂 )

LOST Thoughts : The Other Survivors of Oceanic 815 ( According to Jack)

At the press conference in the Season Four finale, Jack said that Boone Carlisle, Charlie Pace and Libby were the other “survivors” of the crash before they succumbed to injuries or died on the Island under different circumstances. Of all the people that actually survived, why choose these three? I believe it is because all of them died an “innocent” death.

Boone died because he fell in that Nigerian drug plane, trying to help Locke, and in the process, made contact (or so he thought) with the outside world. ” Boone was a sacrifice that the Island demanded” said Locke. Jack saw it as negligent homicide. Either way, he died for “the cause”, whether for destiny or rescue.

Charlie Pace gave his life because of his strong belief in the “visions” of Desmond and his equally powerful devotion to Claire, Aaron and his friends. Again, death with the puriest of motive.

* E from Long Live Locke blog made an excellent point that Charlie made contact with Penny and that she might talk. Although, I think it was a strange omission, storywise, that Penny didn’t ask Des where Charlie was when she rescued them. Could be chalked up to a combo of love & shock, but still…

Libby was shot (IMO by accident) by Michael in his “understanding” of how he was to get Walt back from The Others. In one of the mobisodes, Juliet is playing like they never asked him to kill. That he thought of that himself. Is this true or more master manipulation, by proxy, from Benjamin Linus. In either case, Libby was a victim of “friendly fire”. ( Well, at least from the information we have been given so far. 🙂 )

Knowing this, I think that if it was necessary to say some more survived the crash for the coverup (not exactly sure why it was, at this point) then maybe they agreed that this was the Losties’ form of memorial to those who’s bravery would have otherwise been forgotten.

Either that or they just wanted the group to number 8 😉 .

LOST Thoughts: The Womb in Question

In the episode ” Not in Portland” (Season Three), Juliet is looking at scans of a woman’s reproductive system that she believes is barren & in her 70’s. According to Richard, she is 26 years old and that this is part of why they need Juliet to be a part of what Mittlelos Labs is doing.

So, is this a random woman? Is it an Other? Or is this someone we are familiar with? Who was flying with a pregancy test? Does it have nothing to do with actual “barrenness” but with time travel? Or is it with the Island’s magnetic qualities? Why can the mother/child survive no later than the 2nd trimester?

Could the lady in question be….Kate? And if so, has she somehow been on the Island and/or contact with “The Others” before (knowingly or unknowingly)?

She has had some moments of “infertility” that we have witnessed. Once with Kevin (her husband), another with Sawyer. Are these just for storyline expediancy or are these clues? She seemed rather “guilty” when asking Sun ” Who flies with a pregnancy test? ” Edward Mars asks Jack if he “fell for her too” in Tabula Rasa (Season One). Did he mean romantically? Was the test Kate’s for EM’s baby? If that is true….no baby in that case either.

* I will be discussing Fringe episodes at this point. Just letting you know if you haven’t seen them and don’t want to get spoiled. 😉

To bring up another JJ Abrams’ show, “Fringe”, in last week’s episode, there was a man that was given an experimental means of communication through his blood that involved heavy metalic content. This person was able to being privy to secret conversations that made him believe that he was “hearing voices” . Are these similar to, or another form of, “The Whispers”? Michael, Sawyer, Jack and Kate (and most likely Walt and tailies as well) all had there blood extracted by the Others. Are they looking to see if they were part of an earlier Dharma experiment much like the one on Fringe?

In Fringe, when they put the man in an MRI, he almost was shredded apart. Is this what is happening with the pregnant women on the Island because of its magnetic properties but in a less concentrated scale? As the womb grows, so does the amount of blood that is encased in it. Has where the Island been “moved” to closer to a polar region, hightening the magnetic “pull” , causing the women and babies on the Island to die?

Or is it the time issue? Is the woman like Richard Alpert seems to be : Young on the outside, older on the inside (much like walking through a used car lot 😉 ) ? Is what is on the inside (i.e. baby ) aging as rapidly as the “home” they are growing in? (Again, much like another Fringe episode a couple weeks ago where a woman is immediately pregnant, baby comes to full term, she delivers then dies …then the “baby” becomes a full grown adult size then dies….4 hours later. )

And is what is in those Dharma shots Claire , Aaron and Desmond were given/taking designed to counteract either the rapid aging and/or polarization factor, so it would help Claire “save” Aaron and Desmond “save the world”?

Then again, they may just be Dharma’s version of Carnation Really Instant Breakfast 🙂 .

LOST Thoughts: Only Children and Desmond’s Brothers

I’ve been noticing (unless we just have not met them yet. The game can change at ANY time.) that the majority of the Losties/Others/etc. are “only children”. A few have one other sibling. Just got me wondering if there is any significance to that “fact”? Were they “manufactured” in a top secret government lab, who’s mission is to saturate the earth with outrageously beautiful , angst ridden people? Or is it just a whole lot easier to write for fewer characters amongst the multitude that is the Lost “family tree” ? 😉

Here’s the breakdown from what , I believe, we’ve been given so far (Let me know if I missed any 🙂 ).

Jack : Only child in “nuclear family”. Half sister (Claire) from an affair.
Kate: Only child
Sawyer: Only child
Locke: between Emily Locke & Anthony Cooper, only child, possible “immaculate conception” (?) Had several foster home “siblings”.
Charlie: Older brother, Liam. Liam has one daughter, Megan
Claire: Only child of single mom. Half brother Jack
<Hurley: brother, Diego
<Michael: Only child

Walt: Only child of Michael and Susan (deceased)

Sayid: Only child
Jin: Only child, mother prostitute, possible other half siblings, paternity questionable
Sun: Only child
Boone: Only child, step sister Shannon (“no blood relation”)
Shannon: Only child, step brother Boone (“no blood relation”)
Nikki : N/A
Paulo: N/A
Aaron: Only child to single mom, Claire
Ji Yeon: Only child of Sun & Jin (according to Juliet)
Arzt: N/A
Rose: ?
Bernard: possible relative, Dr. Nadler (Through the Looking Glass, Season Three)
Frogurt: ?
Ana Lucia: only child
Libby: ?

Mr. Eko: Younger brother ,Yemi

Cindy: ?
Emma: Younger brother, Zack
Zack: Older sister, Emma

Danielle: ?
Alex: Only child
Karl: ?

Ben: Only child, mother died at his birth
Juliet: sister Rachel (Rachel has one son, Julian)

Richard: ?
mikhail-t Mikhail: ?
Bea?
Ethan: ?

Horace:?
Olivia:?
Annie: ?
Ethan:?

Mr. Kwon: ?
The Paces: ?
Mr. & Mrs. Paik: ?
David Reyes: ?
Carmen Reyes:?
Charles Widmore: ?
Penny Widmore: ?
Vincent: No litter information 😉

But then there’s Desmond.

Desmond makes mention to Charles Widmore in “Flashes Before Your Eyes” (Season 3),that he didn’t finish college “Because I had to look after my three brothers after my father….(after he what?! Died? Lost his job? Disappeared for the Island? Joined the circus?)”. To quote comedian Jerry Seinfeld , ” Who aaare these people?”

This reminded me of the book that Locke gave to “Henry Gale” in the armory, “ The Brothers Karamazov” by Fyodor Dostoevsky . (Link: SparkNotes)

It’s about four brothers of a uncaring and distasteful father, Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, and how his greed, lust and cruelty affects the family. (Anthony Cooper kept a picture of him in his wallet 🙂 ) .

Alexie : The kind hearted third brother, a man of faith who tried to take care of his brothers and becomes a monk later in life.

Dmitri : The oldest brother who has “anger issues” and is in constant pursuit of spirtual enlightenment.

Ivan: The second son, who will deal only with “logic” and who’s hatred towards his father & God, leads him down a path of madness and * (spoiler)………murder.

Pavel Fyodorovich Smerdyakov: probable half brother of these three from their father, Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov. He struggles with epilesy, is on the “nasty” side and has adopted his father’s lecherous lifestyle. He is the catalyst for Ivan’s, and the novel’s, tragic turn.

Hmmm…. I wonder if any of the people on Lost match these descriptions 😉 (And possibly what could be in store for them) ? And who is “Daddy Dearest”, the “father figure” that has controlled and tainted (or attempted to) their destinies? Maybe , in light of Jack/Claire, we’ll find out more of these Losties aren’t “only children” after all, brotha!

LOST Parody : “Swimming In Blue Jeans”

” There are two types of people in this world…those who like Neil Diamond and those who don’t” ( Bob Wiley~ “What About Bob”)

I wrote this parody, in tribute, to the much spoken of “fact”, on various LOST podcasts , that our beloved Losties apparently really dig swimming with their jeans on.

As summer is winding down, I thought I’d finally put this song out there (and it’s pretty out there… 🙂 )

WARNING : If you have an aversion to the effects of what happens when denim and salt water mix and/or disturbing ” interpretation” of a Neil Diamond vocalization (are there any other kind?) , turn back NOW! 😉

(If you’d like to hear more LOST Parodies, click the link or find them under “LOST Parodies” under “Catergories” in the Blogroll)

SWIMMING IN BLUE JEANS

Stick like caulk
And chaffin’ so bad, I can barely walk
But if it worked for Sawyer and Charlie
I’d much rather be
Swimmin’ in blue jeans

Denim’s sweet
So I don’t care about the gravity
And like Des and Sayid
I’d like to stay pruney all day
Swimmin’ in blue jeans

Maybe tonight
Maybe tonight by the fire get my jeans nice and dry
But then the sound of the pounding surf
Calls me to dive

Stick like caulk
And fabric so tight that it hurts to cough
But if it worked for Sawyer and Charlie
I’d much rather be
Swimmin’ in blue jeans, babe

And denim’s sweet
So I don’t care it pinches in the seat
And like Des and Sayid
I’d like to stay pruney all day
Swimmin’ in blue jeans

Maybe tonight
Maybe tonight by the fire get my jeans nice and dry
But then the sound of the pounding surf
Calls me to dive

Skin like chalk
Wrinkled like the trenchcoat of Peter Falk
But if I wanna be like a Lostie
I guess I’ll just keep
Swimmin’ in blue jeans

And if you pardon me
Havin’ fun but…
My fly’s rusted shut
From swimmin’ in blue jeans, babe

Until I get some WD-40
I guess I’ll still be
Swimmin’ in blue jeans
